The Lusail Stadium is the first World Cup stadium built by a Chinese company. It is the main stadium for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. This magnificent stadium is located in the Lusail New District (Lusail), north of Doha, the capital of Qatar. The Lusail Stadium will host major events such as the semi-finals, finals and closing ceremonies of the 2022 World Cup. With a construction area of 195,000 square meters, it can accommodate 80,000 people watching the game at the same time. It is the world’s largest World Cup main stadium with the most complex system, the highest design standard, the most advanced technology and the highest degree of internationalization.

The design of the Lusail Stadium is full of futuristic, inspired by the light and shadow pattern of the traditional Arabian lantern (Fanar Lantern). Its shape and design echo the intricate decorative motifs found on bowls, vessels, and artwork that have been used in the Middle East for centuries. The arena’s sleek, bold shape and its sloping roof will delight fans at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
The design goal was to create a striking yet simple form that would reflect the building’s function, respond to Qatar’s climate and enhance the venue for the event, creating an immersive atmosphere for players and spectators.

The lighting effect on the building façade, showing the traditional Qatari enamelled lamp latticework, visually strengthens the structural diagonal grid of the bowl and forms a perforated screen that provides shadows and filters dappled light for the inner lobby. The exterior of the stadium is glittering with gold, highlighting the Arabic cultural characteristics of the Middle East Gulf region where Qatar is located, hence the name of the building “Great Golden Bowl”.
At night, the advanced lighting system will “maximize the interaction of lights and façade openings, and can simulate the welcome light of fan lights for welcoming fans.

The building is topped by a “spoke-wheel” cable-net roof that comes to life when illuminated by lights. With a diameter of 307 meters (1,007 ft), it has become one of the largest stadium tensile cable-net roofs in the world, bringing environmental comfort while unifying the entire bowl under a single envelope.
The ‘bowl’ of Lusail Stadium, externally manifested as a polished golden vessel that glistens at night, becomes a unique and instantly recognizable landmark. With its playful scale and elegant geometry, Lusail Stadium will become an enduring symbol of Qatar’s post-FIFA World Cup™ legacy, serving as a truly memorable venue for this year’s final and many other international events to come.
