The different sports areas and their lighting
Football lighting

The most common type of lighting in football is probably that of a football pitch. This outdoor lighting has its pitfalls as it is usually provided by poles on the edge of the playing field. Here, uniform lighting must be achieved with just a few light points from a distance. Increased attention must be paid to glare.

Tennis lighting

Tennis is played both indoors and outdoors. Although the areas couldn’t be more different, the lighting requirements are the same. The fast-paced sport requires higher levels of lighting, but this must be installed absolutely glare-free from the playing field.

Shooting range lighting

The lighting in the shooting range is very directed towards the target. What is important here is absolutely uniform, shadow-free lighting. When shooting, however, light should support the charging process – but should not otherwise be disruptive.

Ice rinks

The ice rink can actually be compared to conventional sports halls. However, spotlights are required that can meet the higher demands of the cold, damp environment. Relatively high lighting levels must also be achieved here, as ice hockey is a fast sport with a comparatively small puck. For other sports such as figure skating or speed skating, the option of dimming should be available. The reflective ice surface must also be taken into account when planning the lighting.

Equestrian lighting

Equestrian lighting takes place both indoors (equestrian hall) and outdoors. The lighting planning takes into account that the light does not disturb the rider and horse and that all details are still clearly visible to the viewer.

Squash court lighting

Lighting in a confined space with extremely fast play. For lighting planning, this means: robust luminaires, uniform lighting, high illuminance and glare-free light points.

Swimming sports lighting

Reflective water surfaces and humid environments are the challenges when implementing swimming pool lighting. In addition, many swimming pools are not only used for sports. The lighting must also be able to reflect recreational swimming and wellness.

Multifunctional halls / sports halls / sports arenas

Whether it’s a smaller school sports hall or a large sports arena – the lighting here has to be just as multifunctional as the use of the hall. The lighting must be able to cope with various sports, as well as separate sports areas or conversion for concerts, etc.

The illuminance

In the sports sector, the level of lighting in the playing area is very important. Every sport has different requirements to meet different DIN standards. Basically, there are different lighting classes (I, II, III) that differentiate the different sports levels. For example:

Lighting on the football field: DIN EN12193
III: Training operations and league games at district level 75 lux
II: District and state league 200 lux
I: District and state league 500 lux

Tennis hall lighting: DIN 12464
Class I = high-performance competitions are illuminated with 600 lx.
Class II = intermediate level competitions 350 lx.
Class III = Simple competitions, school and recreational sports 200 lx

Shooting range lighting: DIN EN 12193

Different requirements from cities, municipalities, other requirements

In addition to the various requirements of the DIN standards, cities and municipalities often have additional requirements that must be met.

High uniformity

When it comes to sports lighting, absolute uniformity of lighting on the playing field is very important. Uneven lighting bothers the player and, in rare cases, can even make the sport impossible. Precise lighting planning that precisely plans the various lights with optimal radiation characteristics helps here. This planning is then implemented during assembly.

Be aware of light pollution

Especially in outdoor areas and especially in sports lighting, we have to deal with a few light points and powerful spotlights. With optimal lighting planning, only the playing field is illuminated, thus preventing light pollution of the surrounding area.

Fast payback

The conversion to new sports lighting should pay for itself as quickly as possible through the energy costs saved. Lighting control further contributes to reducing energy costs.

Ball throwing safety

Lights used in sports often require a ball throwing certificate. This ensures that a ball hit does not destroy the lamp and that no player can be endangered by falling lamp parts.

Glare

Glare is absolutely fatal in sports lighting. If a player is blinded, they cannot continue the game. When planning the lighting, the playing field floor and the surrounding area must also be taken into account.

Flicker factor

In fast-paced games such as table tennis or ice hockey, the flicker factor of the lights plays a significant role. If the lights flicker, it can cause irritation.

Video recordings, television broadcasts, etc.

If the games are to be recorded or even broadcast on television, even higher lighting requirements apply. HD capable spotlights that are absolutely flicker-free are used here. The illuminance also exceeds the higher requirements of the DIN standards.

Light control

Playing fields are often used in different ways. During the training phase, lower lighting levels are needed than during the game. Or different areas are illuminated. This is where a lighting control comes into play that easily implements these different scenarios for you – via app or at the push of a button.
